A percussion musket built in Belgium on the Swiss Model 1851 pattern, roughly 51 inches overall with a 35.5-inch round smoothbore barrel in 59 caliber and a fine bore. Sighting is a block and blade at the front and an adjustable Swiss rear marked with a cross over S and 48. The barrel carries the oval ELG Belgian proof, a 48 on the left flat and a star over Z over an arrow ahead of the bolster, all under an even brown patina; lock and hammer are unmarked with a plum tone, and the guard and bands show a Swiss cross over C.

The stock has a later finish coat, no chips or cracks and little wear, with a round plug in the wrist where a tang sight may once have sat. Swivels and the slightly short ramrod are present. The action works except that the trigger releases the hammer from half cock, a job for a gunsmith before any live fire. For the Texas collector it invites further research.
