Confederate Type II Richmond Civil War Musket .58 caliber

A Confederate Type II Richmond musket in .58 caliber, dated around 1863, with a 40-inch round barrel that carries proof marks and no serial number. The lock plate reads 1863 at the rear and C.S. RICHMOND, VA. forward of the hammer; the barrel shows a V, P and eagle stamp. Barrel, bands, lock and trigger guard have gone to a gray patina. The bore keeps traces of rifling. The stock has been varnished at some point and carries carved initials, dpx and BV, on the butt. The action holds at half and full cock.

A Richmond-marked musket is a Civil War collector's gun, and the carved initials and the working lock are the kind of details that make one example stand out from another. For a Texas buyer this is a display and study piece; the patina and faint rifling fit its age. Treat it as history rather than a muzzleloader for the January late season, and keep it away from Gulf Coast humidity.
