Pineywoods whitetail, Hill Country deer and feral hogs on Gulf Coast rice fields keep Texas rifles busy most of the year. For a kid on a first deer lease or a smaller hunter who has never had a rifle fit right, the Fierce Firearms Mini Rogue line is worth a look.

These are carbon fiber stocked rifles with a shorter length of pull and a comb that adjusts to put the eye behind the scope. Fierce made them for youth, women and smaller-framed hunters. In heat and humidity, a stainless dual-lug action and carbon stock hold up well. Choose 6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm-08 for East Texas deer, or 308 for a hunter who also wants a rifle for hogs at dusk. The integral bipod rail and QD cups make the rifle easy to set up for a feeder blind or a sendero.

308 Winchester is the classic all-round hunting round: proven on deer, hogs and black bear, with factory ammunition available everywhere. In a rifle this light, 308 recoil is noticeable for a small owner; a 6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm-08 is the gentler start.

Fierce builds the Carbon Mini Rogue on its stainless steel two-lug action. A short 70-degree bolt throw keeps the scope clear, and the Bix'n Andy Dakota trigger can be adjusted to suit the owner.

This rifle has a 20 in barrel, 4+1 capacity, and weighs about 5.8 lb. Finish: Purple Carbon Fiber Camo.

Box blinds with shooting windows reward a rifle that is short and quick to set on a rest. If the length of pull is too long, a kid has to lean back and the muzzle wanders. Fit the stock first, then raise the comb so the scope picture is full and round. Begin with 22 or 6.5 Creedmoor and add 308 once recoil stops being a worry.
