Iron Fuchi Kashira

An iron fuchi and kashira set, the collar and pommel cap that finish a Japanese sword hilt. The kashira shows sages picked out with silver and gold highlights, and the fuchi carries a reclining, sleeping figure. The work is signed Iwamoto Mune Yoshi, also read Soyei, a pupil of Iwamoto So-Itsu, which places it in the last quarter of the 18th century, around 1780.

A signed set from a named pupil of a known master is the sort of fitting a Texas collector of Japanese sword furniture buys for the signature as much as the carving. It can be studied and displayed on its own, kept with other Iwamoto school pieces or used to complete a mounting on a blade that has lost its original fittings. The listing describes condition only as used, so ask for close photographs before deciding.
