A Horstman artillery officer's sword made circa 1840, with a 31.5-inch blade that has been polished. The markings on the ricasso remain crisp and sharp. The grip has lost its wrap and is now bare wood showing the grooves, and the sword comes with its original scabbard.

A clean ricasso marking is the detail a Texas collector of 19th century swords will care about most, and this one keeps it along with the original scabbard, which is often the first thing lost. The polished blade and the bare wood grip are stated as found; a buyer who wants a period-correct wrap can have one restored, or leave the grooved wood as it is. Ask for photographs of the ricasso and the scabbard throat before you decide.
