Kinko Kodzuka

A kinko kodzuka, the handle of the small utility knife carried in a Japanese sword scabbard, decorated with a burnished silver geisha in kimono and a portion of a house behind her. It is signed Goto Mitsu Yasu, whose dates are given as 1794 to 1851, and the seller references Kinko Meikan page 508a for the signature. Stock number MGJ230, listed used under Japanese swords and fittings.

This one is for the Texas collector who buys fittings by maker. A signed Goto piece with a published reference is a different proposition from an anonymous kodzuka, and the figural subject, a geisha with architecture behind her in burnished silver, gives you something concrete to compare against the reference page. It would pair naturally with a polished kogatana blade to make up a complete piece, or stand alone in a fittings display.
